What it is
Epithalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide modeled after epithalamin, a substance extracted from the pineal gland, a small brain organ tied to sleep and melatonin. Its creator's lab in St. Petersburg has studied it since the 1970s. It is built to be a simplified, stable stand-in for that gland extract.
How it works
In cell cultures from its home lab, epithalon appears to switch on telomerase, the enzyme that extends the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes, called telomeres. Because shorter telomeres are associated with aging, that has driven the idea that it could slow aging. Its pineal lineage also lends it a plausible role nudging melatonin and sleep.
