What it is

Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid hormone the brain makes and releases into the bloodstream. It has been FDA-approved as Pitocin for labor induction and postpartum bleeding since 1962. It is also the first peptide hormone ever chemically synthesized — work that won a Nobel Prize.

How it works

In the approved use, it causes the uterus to contract, driving labor and stopping postpartum bleeding. In the brain it acts on receptors in regions tied to social cognition, trust, and stress and modulates your response to other people — which is what earned it the 'love hormone' label.
